A father’s love is profound and great, a father’s love is thick and rough, and a father’s love is silent. Only by heart can you understand it.
Father is the backbone of every family, and his health cannot be ignored.
This Movember, we will discuss about father’s health and the most important topic is prostate cancer.
Worldwide, the incidence of prostate cancer ranks second among all malignant tumours in men. In the early stage of prostate cancer, radical surgery and radiotherapy can be used to obtain a clinical cure close to 100%, and the 5-year survival rate is close to 100%. However, most prostate cancers at this stage have no obvious symptoms or signs and are often difficult to find.
So What Cause Prostate Cancer?
The causes for prostate cancer are not yet known and understood. However, we know that some factors are associated with an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
Age: prostate cancer happens mostly in men over 50 years of age
Family history: A family history of prostate cancer
Results from studies on other risk factors are inconclusive.
Common Symptoms
Early stage of prostate cancer is not detectable. At a later stage the common symptoms are:
- Difficulty or delay in urinating
- Slow or weak stream of urine
- Blood in urine
- Pain in the lower back, pelvis and hips
How to Prevent Prostate Cancer
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can minimize the chance of developing prostate cancer. Therefore, you should eat more fruits, vegetables and grains, and less meat and animal fats.
Further, if your family has had prostate cancer patients, you should consult your doctor to see if you need to be tested.
How is Prostate Cancer Diagnosed
With the improvement of living standards, more and more people begin to pay attention to physical examination. Male friends over 50 will find that there is an item in the physical examination item called DRE and PSA. What is this indicator? What is the clinical significance?
DRE refers to digital rectal examination. It is performed by a doctor who will put a gloved finger into your back passage to feel the back portion of the prostate to determine whether the prostate is abnormal.
PSA refers to the prostate-specific antigen. The PSA index is considered to be one of the inspection indexes with high accuracy and stable traits. Therefore, it is widely used in prostate cancer screening and follow-up after prostate cancer treatment.
When the cancer focus is large enough to cause dysuria, hematuria, or metastasis to the bones to cause pain, most of the disease is in the advanced stage and the opportunity for surgery is lost. Therefore, the significance of DRE and PSA screening is extremely important. Early screening, early detection, and standardized treatment are our most powerful weapons against prostate cancer.
Men over 50 should be screened regularly. In addition, if an immediate family member (brother or father) has prostate cancer, the risk of prostate cancer will increase by more than double; if more than two immediate family members are suffering from prostate cancer, the risk will increase by 5 to 11 times. Therefore, if you have prostate cancer patients in your family, you should add prostate cancer to your guard in time.
Screening frequency: If you have a family history of prostate cancer, it is recommended to start screening after the age of 45, and the recommended frequency is half a year; if there is no relevant family history, you can start screening after the age of 50 and maintain the frequency of once a year.
What is the treatment?
Treatment for prostate cancer depends on the size of the tumour, whether the cancer has spread and the presence of any other medical conditions. It may include the following:
Watchful waiting – involves monitoring the patient by performing the PSA test and DRE regularly, and treating it only when the prostate cancer shows signs of growing
Surgery – involves an operation aiming to cure the cancer by removing the prostate gland
Hormone therapy – aims to reduce the size of the prostate and keep prostate cancer cells from growing
Radiotherapy – involves a course of radiation treatment and may prevent the spread of cancer
However, apart from watchful waiting, the treatment of prostate cancer may have side effects.
