October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s a time to come together as a community and focus on early detection, support, and education. At Healthy Mum and Bub, we care deeply about the health of you and your family, and this month we’re shining a special light on breast cancer, a condition that affects so many Australians.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women, with nearly 20,000 new cases each year. It’s important to remember that men can also be affected. Early detection is key to better outcomes, so let’s stay proactive about our health and encourage loved ones to do the same.
Why Early Detection Matters for Breast Cancer: A Guide for Mums
We know that as busy mums, caring for our families is a top priority, but taking care of ourselves is just as important. Breast cancer has a much higher survival rate when caught early, so making time for self-checks and regular screenings is key.
And here are 3 key screening methods that can help you stay vigilant:
Mammograms or X-rays: Mammograms or X-rays of the breast that are examined by a healthcare professional, this has been proven to be the best way to find breast cancer early.
Monthly Self-Checks: Get to know your body by doing regular self-exams. If you notice any changes—like lumps, thickening, or unusual discharge—reach out to a healthcare professional right away.
Routine Screenings: Women aged 40 and older should schedule regular mammograms. If you have a higher risk due to family history, it’s important to start earlier.
If you’re unsure about your risk factors or screening schedule, our friendly doctors at Instant Consult are just a video call away. You can discuss your concerns from home and get personalized advice on what’s best for you.
